While completing the second year of my Brigham Young University (BYU) Master of Public Administration (MPA) program, several of our class members competed in a nationwide assessment seminar seeking selection to the two-year federal Presidential Management Internship (PMI) program. Of the approximate 850 applicants nationwide from the Ivy League to the then PAC 8 universities, five BYU class members were selected to include myself. Only Princeton University received more invitations with the maximum of eight allowed. The PMI provided opportunity to sample various government experiences, and I elected the Naval Air Systems Command, Utah Governor's Office, and Utah Office of Legislative Research and General Counsel.
