While completing the second year of my Brigham Young University (BYU) Master of Public Administration (MPA) program, several of our class members competed in a nationwide assessment seminar seeking selection to the two-year federal Presidential Management Internship (PMI) program. Of the approximate 850 applicants nationwide from the Ivy League to the then PAC 8 universities, five class members were selected and I was one of the selectees. Only Princeton University received more invitations with the maximum of eight allowed. The PMI provided opportunity to sample various government experiences, and I elected the Naval Air Systems Command, Utah Governor's Office, and Utah Office of Legislative Research and General Counsel.
